Animal Name: Roscoe
IAR ID#: D-12-137
DOB: 2011-12-18 (1 year old)
Gender: Male
Animal Weight: 50 lbs.
Dog Breed(s): Pit Bull Terrier / Plott Hound Mix
Physical Description: Roscoe is a beautiful brindle boy with adorable white markings on his nose, chest, and paws. When we first met Roscoe, his pit characteristics were quite dominant. As he has matured and filled out, however, his unmistakable hound traits have become more obvious. He has soulful brown eyes, floppy yet perpetually curious ears, and hundreds of clownish facial expressions.
Animal Personality: Roscoe has LOADS of personality! He loves people and greets everyone with a wag of the tail. He loves cats and other dogs, also. He has nothing but love in his heart for everyone he encounters! He is food- and praise-motivated and learns quickly. He is extremely affectionate, enthusiastic, intelligent, and playful. Roscoe is the perfect dog for both romping in the backyard and snuggling on the sofa. His favorite things are: going for a run, basking in the sun on a picnic blanket, nibbling on his teddy bear, listening to music (really!), finding treasures in his Kong, and cuddling. Check out his blog here.

Animal History: In late September, while I was driving home from work, I found Roscoe dodging traffic on a busy road. He was emaciated and clearly on a mission to procreate, but he allowed me to interrupt his plans in exchange for half an oatmeal cookie. I brought him home with the hope that my boyfriend and I could get him healthy and find a good permanent home for him. Unfortunately, we have not been able to foster him inside because our elderly resident dog (also a rescue) isn't dog-friendly. Roscoe has spent the last several months living in the swanky "man cave" we constructed for him on the sundeck. In that time, he has transformed from a skinny, undisciplined, frightened puppy to one of the friendliest, most trainable dogs I've ever known. Roscoe will sit and stay like a champ. He also obeys the "down," "come," "wait," and "drop" commands. He has learned so much! We even had to teach him to play! He was baffled when we presented him with a toy for the first time, not at all knowing what he was supposed to do with it. He is a master recreationalist now, however, and loves his Kong and stuffed toys. We would love for Roscoe to be fully integrated into a home as he deserves to be. As it is, we only can bring him inside a few nights a week. We continue to work with him so he will make a good house dog when he finds his forever home. He quickly learned not to go to the bathroom in his kennel, and he transferred that knowledge indoors. We have been working with a well-respected local trainer to fully prepare Roscoe for his new home.
Health Information: Roscoe has been vaccinated, neutered, micro-chipped, and de-wormed. He did test positive for heart worm, but he is responding well to treatment and his prognosis is good. He is an energetic and healthy boy.
Special: When you adopt from IAR, you will receive a certificate for a substantial discount on a series of group training lessons with Jane Marshall (www.cheerydogs.com) or Sue McKinney (www.dogfunforever.com). IAR subsidizes these training sessions to encouruage a life-long and successful bond between the dog and the adopter. The trainers are also donating a portion of their services.
Did You Know: Egyptians really respected their cats! They worshiped them as gods, and anyone caught hunting or mistreating them in any way was put to death.
