Animal Name: Mingo
IAR ID#: D-13-018
DOB: 2009-02-12 (4 year old)
Gender: Female
Animal Weight: 45 lbs.
Dog Breed(s): Hound Mix
Physical Description: Mingo is a beautiful tri-color hound with short soft fur. She stands a little over 2 ft tall and weighs 45 lbs. She has classic floppy hound ears that are velvety soft. Her coat is predominantly white with small black spots on her back and black and brownish-red splotches on her face and back. One of the black splotches on her back looks like a heart which is perfect for her as she is so loving and was rescued right before Valentines' Day. She has elegant black eye-liner around her soulful brown eyes and delicate red eyelashes. She has long limbs that remind me of a deer- though she is decidedly more goofy than a deer when she runs!
Animal Personality: Mingo is new to rescue but just over the last few days she has recovered considerably from the stress of the shelter and is letting her lovely personality shine through. She is a goofy, enthusiastic greeter of everyone she meets-- people, dogs, and cats. Though she is eager to meet dogs and cats she does not jump or rough house with them. She is submissive and backs off without any aggression if a dog or cat signals they don't want her close to them. She is more receptive to signals from dogs and cats than people right now, which suggests she has had little prior experience with people providing structure. She knows people provide affection and she loves having head rubs and belly rubs. She is eager to go on walks but is still getting used to walking on a leash. She will need a calm, patient family committed to continue working on leash training and learning boundaries (e.g. do not put front feet on the kitchen counter). She has done great learning new things in just a few days and I think she will do great with more training. I will provide more information as she continues to settle into her foster home.

Animal History: Mingo was found as a stray running along a highway in Nash County and taken to the animal shelter. No one came to the shelter to claim her so nothing else is known about her history. She is very people-friendly but does not seem to be familiar with walking on a leash or following commands. She may have been an outdoor/ hunting dog.
Health Information: The vet estimates Mingo to be 4-6 years old based on her teeth. Mingo is close to an ideal weight and in great physical shape. Her teeth and gums look healthy (could use a little cleaning but no signs of gingivitis) and she does not have bad breath (just good ol' dog breath), which is a very good sign of health for a dog. Her skin and fur are very healthy looking. She sheds very little and has no signs of skin irritation or hair loss. She enjoys being brushed and massaged. Her ears are also clean. Though she was probably an outdoor dog, she has had no issues with house training. She has a healthy appetite and drinks a normal amount of water and there are no signs of urinary or bowel issues. All in all, she is remarkably healthy looking considering she may have been an outdoor only or hunting dog.
Special: When you adopt from IAR, you will receive a certificate for a substantial discount on a series of group training lessons with Jane Marshall (www.cheerydogs.com) or Sue McKinney (www.dogfunforever.com). IAR subsidizes these training sessions to encouruage a life-long and successful bond between the dog and the adopter. The trainers are also donating a portion of their services.
Did You Know: Declawing cats can lead to a permanent refusal to use the litter box.
