Community Spay/Neuter Program

See below for information on IAR's Community Spay/Neuter Program, but first please enjoy the following video about Independent Animal Rescue and the special animals it has recently rescued.

This past year, only 4 out of every 10 pets taken to local animal shelters in the Triangle found a home. There simply weren't enough homes. However, the good news is that WE have the ability to change these numbers. We have the cure. The answer to ending the pet overpopulation problem is to prevent the births of unwanted puppies and kittens through aggressive spay/neuter programs. Fewer pets in need of homes means less suffering and fewer unnecessary shelter euthanasias.

As much as 80% of the pet overpopulation crisis results from an extremely small percentage of "owned" animals. Thus, IAR developed an innovative Community Spay/Neuter Program, C-SNP (pronounced See-Snip) that specifically targets low-income pet owners within the Triangle region. IAR provides funding for spay/neuter services at no cost to low income pet owners who are unable or unwilling to pay to have their pets sterilized. IAR has partnered with a low-cost veterinary practice in the Triangle area to provide spay/neuter services as well as rabies and distemper vaccines to qualifying companion animals. If needed, IAR will provide transportation for unaltered pets to and from their spay/neuter appointments and will take advantage of every opportunity to educate pet owners on the necessity of pet sterilization and routine pet care.

Available data suggest that shelter euthanisia statistics will begin to decline significantly in Durham County if $93,000-$100,000 can be applied toward this "targeted" spay/neuter effort (each year). Annual cost is anticipated to decline as more animals are sterilized and fewer unwanted offspring are born. Although at times the task seems daunting, this is an extremely exciting time for us and for the animals as we begin to create a very different future for our furry friends. Please help the animals by donating to IAR's C-SNP. Your generous donation will prevent the needless suffering of so many, and increase the likelihood that an animal in need will find a home.
